The What Ifs

Mom: Heather Smith  Daughters: Kelianna and Ashleigh

I was going through my Yahoo news tonight and this caught my eye. Those two little girls, ages 5 and 7 years, saved their mom's life. It all started on a hiking trip when the mom had an asthma attack, and then went into respiratory failure. These young girls travelled over two miles, navigating a lakeside cliff and downed trees until they reached a ranger! Lead by the family dog no less. How brave and courageous these girls are. It got me thinking about how prepared are we around here if theres an emergency? Would my children know how to properly administer nitrates to me? Would they know what to tell 911 about my medical past if I am unable to do so? It is very important that all medical professionals know I have three stints in my heart. Also that I am on blood thinners and various other medication.

Needless to say I recognized we wasn't prepared. I quizzed my older kids and to my surprise they had no idea how to handle an emergency. So tonight began Class 911 at my house. I sat down and prepared a medication list, along with a stint list with locations. On this list I wrote down any special instructions that the EMT's or doctor's needed to know. It is now hanging up by the phone. Just in case because you never know. I rather be prepared, my kids be prepared so it isn't sudden panic mode. In panic mode you can't think. It is just plain chaos all around. My main concern is prepping my kids, so they are not scared if they find me on the floor or need them to contact help.

If you haven't got a plan in place, today is the day. Talk with your kids. Have instructions on what to do in an emergency. We plan vacations, trips, and shopping almost everyday. We never stop and think about creating a list or guide in case of an emergency. I know it isn't something we don't like thinking about. However it better to be aware, than to caught up and have no clue what to do.
